What's New at SDS
SDS has now solved the problem by developing special cenospheres which can be added to any resin to produce any desired reflectivity - no matter the color! This new capability enables infrared contrast matching for any application where color is also important. For example, camouflage for vehicles, buildings, uniforms, and aircraft can go from black to forest green to Navy Gray without impacting their reflective properties. Another potential application makes buildings (no matter their color) reflect, rather than absorb, heat from the sun. Imagine your own possibilities! Finally, Crispy-Crusted Pizza...Straight From Your Microwave? The world loves pizza. Hot, luscious pizza with any topping and a perfect crispy crust is what we all expect. However, the only way to get that perfect crust has been from a conventional oven...until now. Recent experiments performed by a Southern research institute discovered that producing a crispy crust from a microwave is easy...when SDS materials are included in packaging. Researchers coated paper pizza pans with special SDS material, threw on a medium pepperoni pizza and set the controls to high. Minutes later, a hot, perfectly browned, crispy-crusted pizza emerged. The hungry researchers couldn't discern the difference between crust from a conventional oven and the one from the microwave. The special SDS material absorbed the microwaves and converted the energy to heat, providing just the right amount of heating to crisp and brown the pizza crust. Don't look for the answer to your microwave pizza dilemma tonight in the frozen foods section of your local grocery. However, the experiment may open the door to easy, quick microwave cooking solutions for tomorrow. Further experiments are planned, in cooperation with the pulp and paper packaging industry, to explore other SDS coating applications which might fit the restaurant and home meal industry.
